Who we are

Hampstead Classical Society aims to promote interest in Classics and Ancient Philosophy. These include works from the ancient world, written in Latin and Ancient Greek, ranging from history to literature and philosophy. We offer:

The HCS Book Club. This is free and open to all. It is not required to be a member of the Society. Everyone is welcome, whether they are Classics specialists, have an interest in the subject, or have never had the chance to read any ancient texts. We read texts in English translation. The author for 2025 is Sophocles. We read the Antigone. Book club inquiries should be sent to bookclubhampsteadclassical@gmail.com.

The HCS Membership Programme. HCS runs many more events beyond the monthly Book Club. These events are open to members only. The best way to join is to come to a meeting and ask our membership officer, for an application form. Members are entitled to our monthly newsletter, a calendar of events, a copy of the Proceedings of the Hampstead Classical Society, and exclusive access to our Library. Membership inquiries and subscriptions should be sent to membershiphampsteadclassical@gmail.com.

I founded Hampstead Classical Society because my heart hurt. Noble disciplines such as Classics and Ancient Philosophy are in decline in the West. Yet these disciplines help explaining human emotions, thinking, and actions. This Society is intended as a guide and invitation for those who want to explore the history of philosophy, classical studies, and themselves.
